Don't feel bad about 10%. As a matter of fact when you start doing it, you will
find out that there are a lot of effort and labor you will put into it.
Often, when you first doing it you will find out that it's easy money.
While you are shopping. You could look for many things at the same time.
More effiency to your shopping experience. Why not?
However, from time to time, you will find out people basically just want you to
help them find out the price that is lower than the website they usually could buy.
That is the point when you feel frustrated because you got many requests
that is almost impossible to fulfill.
Why 10%? Because there is a chance you will get taxed. By taiwan custom, if you want
to do it in a long run, thenyou cannot always expect people to bring them back.
Time is an issue, therefore, you need to ship by Fedex or UPS, or the UK postal.
Henece, you will have a chance to get taxed. It's 10% of the value you
declare on your custom form. Who is paying? you or your clients? you have to
ask yourself that. I pay for it, that is what i do. This is the concept of
insurance in business. Allocate your profit for things like custom tax.
Another reason is return. Don't expect the wesite you buy from won't make
mistake. I am a big buyer from Planet Funk. They make whole bunch of misakes.
Guess what, they are not paying for the return; I am. I believe to sustain a
health growth for your small business venture, 10% is minimal. As a help-buy
seller, and you charge 5%. I actually don't mind. Because as your competitor,
I know you won't stay in business long because you will get frustrated and
give up at the end. Unless, you have a steady source of high end customer who
buy burberry, hermes very often. Don't worry about charging 5%, but worry
about how to increase the percentage later on if you charge 5% now.
I live in the United State. I have been doing it for almost 2 years.
There is good time and bad time. It is a good experience, and i think
you will enjoy it. Until today, I am still happy whenever I am able to
help people buy things.
As a help-buyer, you need to manage your cash flow. Remember to get a good
credit card with good cash back reward. You will find out that they often pay
you late. One month or 2 month later. You could ask them to pay full amount,
and most people do, but they don't like it. You are likely to lose clients.
The best thing to do is to ask them to pay deposit first, a small percent
to show they are serious. Otherwise you might end up buying lots of things,
and return them. Give your clients an easy time frame to pay the full amount
is crucial strategy.
2nd thing to remember: have a central point in taiwan to ship all your products.
Then have your family ship them out individually to your cleints in taiwan.
It save a lot of your shipping cost, and giving your a more competitive edge.
Because shipping is the most difficult thing in the whole business. When you
start doing the business, you will agree with me that shipping will make the
total price look very bad for your client from time to time.
3rd thing to remember: have a target niche. Don't just buy everything for
your customer. If your strength is bags, just buy bags, don't help-buy Bose.
In the beginning, it's okay because your request is low. But later on, you
will find out you will need to go to "special discount" stores a lot.
That is where you will find cheap stuffs, and separate you from other sellers.
It require time and transportation fee, so add that to your cost.
If you are interested, I have a few more tricks to teach you. Don't know if
it works in UK. However, it certainly helps me as a US seller.
I give you credit for what you do. Very admirable, and I like to see young
people like you to do well. You will meet a lot of nice people in your
journey.
Wish the best for you
Sincerely,
James Liang
